3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 tsp. ginger

Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly. Sift together all dry ingredients 3 times, then add to shortening, sugar, egg and molasses mixture.
