MISTY MOUNTAIN GINGERBREAD AND
LEMON SAUCE
 
1 c. molasses
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. ginger
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cloves
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. hot water

LEMON SAUCE:

2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. lemon juice
5 tbsp. sugar
Grated rind of 1 lemon
1/8 tsp. salt

BREAD: Bring first 7 ingredients to a boil. Combine flour and salt; beat into boiled mixture. Add buttermilk and eggs, beating well. Dissolve soda in water and stir into the batter. Pour into a greased and floured oblong baking pan or dish. Serve with lemon sauce.

LEMON SAUCE: Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour, stir over medium heat until smooth. Add water, lemon juice, stirring constantly, until thick. Add sugar, lemon rind, and salt. Makes about 1 cup.
