I have made the same recipe, but like my mother did when I was a little girl u can add chinese noodles, mini marshmellows, and peanuts instead of oatmeal. I have also added mint choc.chips with the cocoa. Be creative!

If I use 5 minute oatmeal, after I add the oatmeal, vanilla, and peanut butter I cook it for a few extra minutes on very low heat, stirring frequently, to improve the texture and allow the oatmeal to absorb the other ingredients so they harden better.

I would love to know how to make these without the peanut butter. I've made this recipe for years, but my husband can't have the peanut butter anymore. Thanks.

I've made this recipe since I was a teenager. They're in my mothers Betty Crocker recipe book. She received it as a wedding present in 1953. It is one of my favorite cookies, I can have a batch made up and gobbled up in no time!

GREAT RECIPE! You really can't go wrong. 1/2 cup to a cup of extra ingredients depending on your taste. Even if they don't set up, they are great to eat with a spoon. No batch goes uneaten at my house!

I loved many foods my high school lunch ladies prepared, but this cookie was my favorite. I found them several years ago, much to my pleasure.

Reading the comments, I learned how this is a forgiving recipe that will tolerate tweaking.

Lately I have been including coconut products in every dish and I will make these tomarrow. But I will be using coconut oil, coconut meat, coconut milk and coconut sugar and this will be healthy in many ways, including good for diabetics.

Has anyone added red hots yet?

Cheerio ~

When I was little, my great grandmother would make these for us. She would freeze them in sandwich baggies so that each child would get their own little bag to take home from visits. We called them PatPat cookies (thats what we called her). She has been gone for almost 20 years and these cookies are like my childhood in a baggie. I still think they are best frozen!

I got this recipe from my daughter. She is making them for her husband for Valentines Day. We all love them and I am glad to see the varieties. Will try some of them. Soon

This is actually more like oatmeal fudge than a cookie -- outstanding nonetheless! I'm experimenting with ingredients to make it more nutritious; my fave add-ins so far are raisins (softened by boiling briefly) and chopped almonds. With raisins, milk, cocoa, oatmeal and nuts, these are actually a reasonably good source of iron.

Love these no-bake cookies, I have been eating these for
years, mine do better by boiling mixture for 2 minutes.
A quick treat when there are a lot of chocolate lovers in the house...

My Uncle as a child put this recipe in a cook book for Mothers Day in 1959. The name of the recipe was called "Wallies". I am not sure why they were called that. I have had them all my life. My Grandmother made for my Aunts, Uncles, siblings, childern and grandchildern. She use coconut too. Mostly with oatmeal.

My family has always loved these and they are so forgiving. Went to make them one day and discovered as I was beginning to cook the butter, milk and sugar together that I only had two cups of oats.I found some small amounts of several cereals left in the bottoms of the cereal boxes (my 5 kids and husband were fond of leaving littlt dabs for the next guy). I roughly crushed some flake cereals and added some grape nuts and some rice krispies to make up the extra cup of add-ins and it was a real hit. Unfortunately it is impossible to duplicate.
