I have also substituted the oatmeal with a bag of trail mix or a bag of dried cherries. Both are great!!

Added more oats until it isn't so gooey. I cut sugar in half, added way more oats, maybe 1-2 more cups, didn't measure, throw in some wheat germ or even flax to make them healthier. My kids like them but then again they've always had reduced sugar, eg- half chocolate half white milk, watered down juice, etc. These were great.

I just tried it with 1/2 a stick of butter and it turned out great with less calories! Also add wheat germ and flax for a healthier version. I boil for 3 minutes also.

You do need to bring the liquids to a boil for at least 1 minute. They won't stay together if not. Sort of like when your making homemade candies. The sugar has to "cook down" to be able to stick together.

They are the fastest cookies to make. And the best. I sometimes change up the flavoring to maybe walnut flavor. But my favorite change is just adding crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy. We joke and call them poo-poo cookies. Sorry if I grossed anyone out with that.

I Love these cookies! It's a good recipe for those who receive W.I.C. because you get milk, peanut butter, and oatmeal every month!

I am from New Jersey and never heard of this recipe but I sure am going to try it many different ways to see which one I like the best although they all sound great. I think to make it more healthier I would substitute the sugar with a Splenda sugar and see how it turns out with all the other sweet ingredients. I don't think the taste would be much different. Wish me luck - thanks to all of you!

I have not ever made these but, have eaten them. I just happen to find the recipe in cooks.com. Will try my hand at making them. My best friend's mother made them when we were children, lol, that was a while ago. Good things just can not be put down.

We like to store these cookies in the freezer. They make a great summer treat with a glass of milk! Adding peanuts also makes them yummy and crunchy! :-)

Can you use Splenda or any other sugar substitute? Same measurements as sugar?
