OLD FASHIONED BUCKWHEAT CAKES
1/2 cake yeast
1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 lg. tbsp. molasses
2 c. buckwheat flour
1 egg, well beaten
2 tbsp. shortening
1/2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in milk

At night, dissolve yeast cake in a little lukewarm water. Add to the buckwheat, flour and salt. Mix quite stiff with warm water. Let rise until morning. Add egg, melted shortening and molasses, then soda. To this, add enough milk to make a rather stiff batter. Cook on hot griddle. Serves 3 or 4 people.
