CALICO BEAN SOUP 
1 1/2 c. mixed dry beans
3 qt. chicken stock
1 bunch fresh parsley
2 bay leaves
2 whole cloves
1 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. marjoram or cilantro
1 lg. can tomatoes
2 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. sliced carrots
2 c. chopped celery
1/4 c. chopped green pepper
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tbsp. chili powder

Add any or all of the following: 1 c. chopped smoked sausage or ham

Wash and drain the beans and place in a large soup pot with broth. Heat to boiling. Place the herbs in cheesecloth and tie it at the top. Add to the boiling broth. Simmer covered for 3 hours.
