3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening or butter
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

May use 2 teaspoons baking powder instead of tartar and soda.

Blend sugar and shortening well. Stir in beaten eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt, cream of tartar and baking soda, mixing well. Chill until easy to handle. Turn out onto board dusted with confectioners' sugar. Roll to 1/8 inch thickness. use favorite cookie cutters and bake on greased cookie sheet 10-12 minutes at 375 degrees. Cookies spread in oven so place 2 inches apart. May sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar before baking if desired.
