PORTUGUESE SWEET BREAD
1/4 c. flour
1 1/2 pkgs. dry yeast
1/4 c. milk (warm)

Mix ingredients in small bowl and let stand until double in bulk.

8 1/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. milk (warm)
1 tsp. salt
6 eggs
1 1/2 sticks butter, melted

All above ingredients should be at room temperature before making bread. Add flour, salt in large bowl. Mix eggs, sugar and milk together, then add to flour mix. As you are kneading and mixing the dough with your hands, slowly add melted butter to dough mixture, wetting hands at the same time with butter to prevent dough from sticking. Alternate kneading and adding melted butter until all the butter is gone.

Keep kneading until dough has air bubbles and feels elastic. Lightly sprinkle flour over dough ball - cover bowl and let rise until double in bulk. Punch down dough and let rise for a second time. Then place dough into greased loaf pans. Let rise again. It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to rise each time. Brush tops with egg whites. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Makes 3 loaves.
