BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES (EA) 
6 c. sliced cucumbers, 6" cucumbers
1 lb. onions, sm., white onions
1 green pepper
1/4 c. salt

Wash cucumbers but do not peel, slice thin. Peel and slice onions. Seed and shred pepper. Mix vegetables, add salt, cover and let stand 3 hours. Just before 3 hours are up, make a syrup as follows:

2 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. turmeric
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tbsp. mustard seed
1/2 tsp. celery seed
2 c. mild cider vinegar
1/4 tsp. powdered alum

Mix all ingredients. Bring slowly to boiling point and boil for 5 minutes. Drain vegetables thoroughly in a colander, rising well with cold water, and add to hot syrup. Heat slowly to just below boiling, stirring occasionally. Place in jars and seal in usual manner. Makes 4 pints.
