DATE AND NUT CAKE (EA) 
2 c. pitted dates, chopped
2 c. hot water
2 tsp. baking soda

Pour water and soda over dates and let stand while preparing batter.

BATTER:

1 c. shortening, Crisco
2 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix the same as a cake, add date mixture and flour alternately. Pour batter into a greased floured 13 x 9 x 2 1/2 inch pan. When cool dust with confectioners' sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.
