I substituted ground beef for ground turkey, browned before putting in the oven... and added 1/2 tsp olive oil to help keep the lean mixture from drying out. It was perfect!!!!

I always brown my meat first, drain AND rinse it under hot water! That way I know I have removed as much fat as possible from the meat. As for sodium content, I don't add the onion soup mix, rather dried or freshly chopped onions. You can also use shredded cheese instead of the cheese soup to cut out some salt. Love to make it with corn and green beans or sweet peas to make it a meal in one. Sometimes I even add a can of diced tomatoes! I also like to bake my tater tots while browning the meat to make sure they are nice and crispy! Love this recipe!!!

The tater tot casserole recipes are great, we can all add our own twist. What frustrates me is Nola from British Columbia griping about sodium content. It is a recipe! If you can't or don't like it, fine. This is for recipes, not judgement.

My recipe is very similar but I swap the ground beef for ground turkey for dietary reasons. A friend of mine uses buffalo meat instead and it is also VERY delicious.

We also swap the cream of mushroom for cream of chicken or cream of broccoli because my husband hates mushrooms. :) mmmm.

We have been making one similar to this for years! Just 4 things needed, not counting if you want to add anything to season the hamburger. We just cook the hamburger 3/4 of the way, put it in a baking dish, layer it with cream of chicken or mushroom, add sharp shredded cheese (lots of it), and then top it off with tator tots. We have always known it as Aunt Winnie's Supper but I have never been able to find it online until this. It is the yummiest and we love making it!

My daughter gave me her tator tot casserole recipe which is very similar except cooking the meat first. Uses cream of chicken WITH HERBS soup (Campbell's makes it) as she doesn't do mushrooms at all. Also uses MINI tots.. grandkids love it. Shredded cheese add after baking and put back in to just melt. I want to try using the cheese soup; sounds good and creamy.

This was so good was not expecting to be so good using good old condensed cream of mushroom and cheddar soups I baked it at a higher temp. I suggest baking this casserole at 375°F for 1 hour or until tots are well browned.

I like salt and I love fat. Two of the four basic food groups along with chicken skin and beer.

Simply awesome recipe for tater tot casserole. Prepared it the night before, and placed the tater tots on top right before baking. It was so easy. It takes a little longer to bake than other casseroles, but the simplicity involved by not cooking the meat, more than makes up for that time. Thanks for contributing the recipe.
