This sounds really good. But have you looked at the sodium content in the soups? I used to use Mushroom soup alot, but now I really limit it. I'm sure the sodium is five or six times the daily limit for adults. Sorry to dis this.

Hi Nola,

If you want to use a low cost lower sodium substitute, try our Casserole Soup Mix which will allow you to still make your favorite casseroles without all the extra sodium.

I have used and ate, this for years! This recipe is so simple compared to most others that I have heard of...It could be switched with low sodium, if needed!

I tried this recipe for Christmas and it was so greasy. The recipe never said you need to use 90/10 meat. Geez

 Josh (Tennessee) says:
Steph if you cook the meat prior to adding it to the casserole dish, you can drain off a vast majority of the grease.

If you use ground round or ground sirloin the grease/fat content is much lower. Gr. sirloin is all I use.

This is the epitome of unhealthy, low-rent, Midwest cooking. That said, I loved, loved, loved it! I stuck with a leaner ground beef so as to avoid greasy pooling and added red pepper flakes. A spritz of cooking spray will also aid in the browning of the tots.

LOL! I have to agree with you, Don. I used 73/27 ground chuck beef and regular soups (not low sodium). Turned out FANTASTIC tasting! Yes, quite greasy because I didn't brown the beef in a skillet first (next time I will)...but that greasiness and high sodium content is what makes this recipe delicious. Due to the unhealthy sodium and grease, I would only make this once in a while, unless the beef is browned and drained of grease prior to baking dish placement and lower sodium soups are used. Even then, it might not taste as good!

I add a bag of frozen peas between the mushroom soup and cheese. You know, for color! Yummy! White trash dining at it's best! lol!
