This was how my Grandmother cooked cabbage... no "fatback" or bacon needed so you don't get those extra calories! haha Thanks for reminding me how good "plain old cabbage" is!

I made this delicious and very flavorful cooked cabbage and with this recipe I added my own touch to bring out the flavor even more I sautéed onions with the butter and then cut 2 strips of bacon into bite size pieces put the raw bacon on a paper plate and pop in the microwave with paper towel so you won't have a greasy mess to clean up in your microwave after the bacon is cooked put the bacon in with the butter along with the cooked onions and put the cabbage in a cast iron skillet or if you don't have a cast iron skillet you can use whatever skillet you have just make sure the skillet will hold a half a head of cabbage. Keep turning over the cabbage, butter, sauteed onions to be sure that it is well coated. And for everyone who makes this yummy side dish to whatever your having as the main dish this cooked cabbage recipe and along with my 2 added ingredients cooked bacon and onions. Your family will be asking for seconds on the cooked cabbage even your kids will ask for a second helping of cabbage.

This is Martha Stewart's most requested recipe. She says to cook the cabbage until it is a little bit browned as it gives it a wonderful flavor.

I kicked this up a bit by adding a little vinegar and a few red pepper flakes... (about 1/2 hour before cabbage is done). Have also added crumbed up... browned bacon. So simple! This is a recipe you can adapt to your taste. Love it!
