RED VELVET CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cocoa
1 tbsp. vinegar

Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add vanilla and blend with creamed mixture. Add flour, salt and milk alternately. Mix soda and vinegar and add to mixture last. Mix well and bake in 3 layers at 350 degrees about 25 or 30 minutes. Cool.

FILLING FOR CAKE:

1 c. milk
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 rounded tbsp. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening-oleo
1 tsp. butter flavoring
