1 gal. water
2 c. sugar
1 c. molasses
1 c. vinegar
1 tsp. ginger

This was the standard "switchel" carried to the fields to quench the thirst of crews of haymakers. Maple syrup or boiled cider was sometimes substituted for molasses.
