FRESH PLUM CAKE
2 lb. fresh blue plums
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 c. milk, lukewarm
3 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 tbsp. butter

Wash and gently cut plums in half, removing the pits. Sprinkle yeast into 1/4 cup of the milk. Let stand until dissolved. Mix flour, salt, and 1/3 cup of the sugar in a large bowl. Stir dissolved yeast, butter, egg and remaining milk into flour. Knead into a soft dough. Let rise for 30-40 minutes in a warm place. Punch down and roll on a lightly floured board into an oblong about 9 x 13-inches. Fit into a greased pan of that size. Pinch edges to make a slight edge around all sides. Let rise for 20 minutes. Place plums on top with cut side up. Sprinkle with remaining sugar; dot with butter. Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) for 35-40 minutes. Slice and serve warm.
