VERNON'S MOTHER'S DATE NUT CAKE 
1/2 lb. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. butter
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp. baking powder

Mix dates, soda and boiling water thoroughly - let cool. Mix together sugar, butter, salt, egg, nuts, flour and baking powder. Add date mixture. Pour into 13x9 greased cake pan. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes or until done.

TOPPING:

1/2 lb. chopped dates
1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. boiling water

Cook dates, sugar and boiling water until thick, medium heat. Spread on slightly cooled cake. Top with whipped cream.
