COOTER (TURTLE) STEW
5 lbs. turtle meat
1 lb. pork chops
1 lb. stew meat or venison
2-3 lbs. chicken
1 lb. onions
3 lg. cans tomato juice
1/2 gallon milk
2 tbsp. ground red pepper
1 sm. bottle A-1 steak sauce
Salt and pepper to taste

Cook all of the meats together until done. Pick the meat off the bones. Combine the meat with all of the other ingredients and simmer for a minimum of 2 hours before serving. This recipe yields approximately 4 gallons of "cooter stew", and is said to be highly addictive. If there is any left over, it freezes well for future use.

Cooter (Turtle) Stew

This is the closest recipe I've seen to being right on cooter stew. I grew up eating it, my dad grew up eating it, and his dad and so on. Dates back from way back in the 1800 or further. We've always used just turtle meat from a couple or three snapping turtles (cooters). While you're boiling the meat off the bone you have to keep the foam scooped off that forms on top. Don't add the 1/2 gallon of milk till about the last 30 mins of simmer and don't let it boil after the milk is added. Never used any A1 sauce, but I think I'll try it on the next cooking.

I've cooked and ate Cooter stew since I could walk! My recipe is very close. I cook my meat off the bone then start it in a cast iron pot outside. I add veg-all quite a bit (like 10 cans) and I add diced tomatoes and Texas Pete. 35 to 40 minutes before its done I add a couple gallons of milk then serve over saltine crackers and enjoy!
