THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening or butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. ground nuts

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolk and vanilla. Add flour and salt. Roll into one inch balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg white and roll in ground nuts. Bake 5 minutes and remove from oven. Make a thumbprint in each cookie and bake for 8 more minutes. Use candied fruit, jelly, or preserves in the print.
