THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening or butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg, separated
1/2 tbsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
3/4 c. finely chopped nuts
Jelly, or tinted powdered sugar icing

Mix shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla thoroughly. Add flour and salt; mix well. Form dough into balls and roll in egg white and then in nuts. Place on ungreased cookie sheet, then press thumb gently in center.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Fill thumbprints with jelly or icing when cool.
