THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/4 c. shortening
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease cookie sheets. Cream sugar, shortening and butter; add egg yolk and vanilla. Mix. Add flour and salt. Form into 1" balls. Dip into beaten egg white, roll in finely chopped nuts. Place on cookie sheet. Bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie, return to oven and bake 8 minutes. Cool. Place jelly, candied fruit, icing, etc. into thumbprint. Makes about 2 dozen.
