NEW YEAR'S DAY SOUP 
2 c. dried mixed beans
2 tbsp. salt
2 tbsp. barley
Ham or ham hocks
1 lg. onion, chopped
1 lb. 2 1/2 oz. can tomatoes
1 tsp. chili powder
Juice of 1 lemon

Wash beans. Place in large kettle. Cover with water 2 inches above beans. Add 2 tablespoons salt. Soak overnight. Drain in morning. Add 2 tablespoons barley, 2 quarts water and ham hocks or ham. Bring to boil. Simmer slowly 3 hours. Add 1 large chopped onion, 1 lb. 2 1/2 oz. can tomatoes, 1 teaspoon chili powder, and juice of 1 lemon.

Remove ham hock, cut up ham and add pieces to above. Season with salt and pepper as desired. Simmer slowly 1 hour or more. Serve with tossed salad and crackers. Good luck for the New Year! (An English tradition.)
