BASIC SLICED COOKIES
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
3 c. all purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt

In a mixing bowl heat shortening and butter, with an electric mixer on medium to high speed about 30 seconds or until softened.

Add about half the flour, the sugar, egg, milk, vanilla, baking soda and salt to the shortening mixture. Beat until thoroughly combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Then beat or stir in the remaining flour.

Shape dough into 2 (8") rolls. Wrap in waxed paper or clear plastic wrap. Chill for 4 to 24 hours.

Cut dough into 1/4" thick slices. Place 2" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned. Remove cookies and cool on a wire rack. Makes about 60.
