BUTTERMILK CAKE 
1 c. shortening
3 c. sugar
4 c. sifted cake flour
3 tsp. baking powder
2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
4 egg whites, beaten stiff

Cream shortening and sugar. Add a little buttermilk and beat until fluffy. Sift all dry ingredients and add alternately with the rest of the buttermilk. Add vanilla. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and mix well. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Use three 9 inch round pans or one 10 x 14 inch pan.

BAKER'S ICING:

3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1 c. Crisco
1/8 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix flour and milk until smooth. Cook slowly, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and cool. Add Crisco and mix. Add salt and beat until mixture is fluffy. Add sugar and mix until crystals disappear. Add vanilla and mix for one minute.
