HERMAN STARTER | |
2 c. all purpose flour 2 c. warm water 1 pkg. dry yeast 1/4 c. granulated sugar Mix flour, water, sugar, and yeast together in plastic or glass container and let stand overnight, loosely covered, in a warm place. The next day refrigerator, loosely covered. Stir every day. On the 5th day feed batter with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, and 1 cup flour. Stir well, cover and refrigerate. On the 10th day, stir batter and take out 2 cups. Give 1 cup to a friend, keep 1 cup for your own starter, and use the remaining batter. Return your 1 cup of starter to the empty container. Add to it 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of milk, and 1/2 cup of sugar. Repeat on the 5th day. Stir daily. On the 10th day you may divide and bake again. If you do not wish to bake on the 10th day, add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the starter, and repeat every 10th day until you are ready to bake. But don't wait too long, or you won't be able to get anything else in the refrigerator. |
