6 tbsp. butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/3 c. shortening
1 egg
1 tbsp. milk
2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
Hard candies, 3 oz. each different color, crushed

Beat butter with sugar until fluffy. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Beat well. Gradually add the rest of the ingredients (except candy). Mix well. Cover and chill 3 hours.

Cover cookie sheets with foil. Roll out dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Place on cookie sheet. With a sharp knife, cut out sections of each cookie to make design, leaving a rim all the way around. Fill each cut out with crushed candy. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, peel off foil and cool on wire rack.
