NETTIE'S PICKLES 
7 lbs. cucumbers
5 lbs. sugar
1/4 c. alum
5 c. white vinegar
1 c. water
1/2 pkg. mixed pickle spices
1/2 c. salt
1/2 c. lime
1-3 c. water, if needed for more juice

Slice cucumbers, soak in lime water for 12 hours. Drain, soak 4 hours in salt water. Rinse, drain. Bring to a boil in alum water (enough water to cover cucumbers), then drain.

Mix sugar, vinegar, spices and the 1 cup or more of water and heat until all dissolves. Pour in cucumbers;, boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Put in jars and seal. Makes 12 pints.
