MOM'S ORANGE FRUIT CAKE
3 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 lb. orange slice candy, cut up
1 (8 oz.) pkg. pitted dates, chopped
2 c. walnuts
1 c. flaked coconut
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 cup milk
1 c. orange juice mixed with 2 c. sifted confectioners' sugar

Sift together flour and salt. Combine orange candy slices cut up, pitted dates, walnuts and flaked coconut. Add 1/2 cup flour mixture, mixing well. Work with a spoon until light. Beat well butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add soda and milk mixture adding alternately with flour mixture. Add candy mixture.

Bake in greased and floured angel food pan 300 degrees for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Remove from oven and pour over hot cake slowly the orange juice that's been mixed with confectioners' sugar. Let stand in refrigerator overnight before removing from pan.

This fruitcake bakes so slow. Be sure to test for doneness with a toothpick. I bake for at least 1/2 longer than called for; might even set the oven at 325 degrees.
