DUTCH APPLE CAKE 
1 c. sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. melted butter
1 egg, well beaten
4 c. sliced, tart apples
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/3 c. shortening
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 c. milk

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and 2 tablespoons sugar. Cut in shortening. Add combined egg and milk. Mix well.

Spread on bottom and sides of greased 10x6x2 baking pan. Arrange apple slices in overlapping rows on the batter, slightly pressing down straight edges. Sprinkle with mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Brush with melted butter.

Bake in 400 degree oven for about 40 minutes, or until apples are tender. Cut in squares. Serve warm with cream or foamy sauce.
