3/4 c. shortening
1 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. salt (or less to taste)
3/4 to 1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 c. brown sugar
3 eggs (added one at a time)
2 1/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. baking soda
3/4 to 1 tsp. cloves
1 c. buttermilk

Sift dry ingredients together and combine with shortening. Add buttermilk and beat 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time and beat 2 more minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes in 2 (9 x 1 1/2 inch) round pans.
