APPLESAUCE-SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. Pillsbury (plain) flour
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches, or 2 round pans. Beat all ingredients except frosting in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes.

Pour into pans. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean; rectangular 60-65 minutes, layers 50-55 minutes. Cool layers 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely. Frost with the frosting.

BROWN BUTTER FROSTING:

Heat 1/3 cup butter over medium heat until delicate brown. Mix in 3 cups powdered sugar. Beat in 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla and about 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and of spreading consistency.
