1880'S MOLASSES CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
3 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 c. dark molasses
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 c. strong hot coffee

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Cream sugar with shortening, add eggs, molasses, spices and flour. Mix thoroughly, add coffee with soda dissolved. Pour into greased pan. Test with toothpick in center, dry if cake done. Frost with a white butter frosting.

My great-gram was famous for this cake. We still enjoy it at family gatherings.
