DATE BRAN MUFFINS 
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
1 tbsp. water
1 1/2 c. unprocessed bran
1 1/4 c. milk
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 c. butter, melted
1 c. chopped dates or raisins
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Grease 18 muffin cups - cream 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup sugar, shortening. Beat in water until fluffy - spoon 1 rounded teaspoon in each muffin cup. In large bowl combine bran, milk, molasses, egg, butter and dates and let stand 10 minutes. Combine remaining ingredients and stir into bran mixture just until moistened - fill muffin pans. Bake for 18-20 minutes in a 400 degree oven and remove to wire rack to cool.
