Dates:

1 c. dates, cut
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. hot water
2/3 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
2 eggs
1 2/3 c. flour

Cream shortening, add sugar, eggs, flour and cocoa. Then add date mixture. Pour in greased pan. Sprinkle 1/2 c. sugar, chocolate chips and nutmeats on top.

Bake 350 for 30 minutes.
