DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs
2 c. cake flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda (in 1/2 c. hot water)
1/2 c. sour cream

Cream butter and sugar well, add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Add flour, salt and cocoa sifted together alternately with soda, water and cream which have been mixed together, add vanilla. Bake in large well greased sheet pan or in layers. If in large pan bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees. In layers, oven 375 degrees for a little less time. Ice with following icing.

CHOCOLATE ICING:

Put in top of double boiler: Pinch cream of tartar 2 unbeaten egg whites 5 tbsp. water

Mix well, then place over hard boiling water and beat constantly with rotary egg beater for 7 minutes or until it peaks. While this is cooking melt 4 squares unsweetened chocolate. Add this to icing after it has been removed from stove. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla. Pour on sheet cake or spread when cool enough on layers.
