3 c. sliced apples
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Cream together shortening and sugar. Add vanilla and egg and cut in apples. Add sifted dry ingredients. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees.
