SPICY BUTTERMILK COFFEE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. brown sugar
2/3 c. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. buttermilk
2 beaten eggs
1/3 c. chopped nuts

Combine flour, brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly; set aside 1/2 cup crumb mixture. To remaining crumb mixture add baking powder, soda, and spices; mix well. Add buttermilk and eggs; mix well. Pour into two greased 8 x 1 1/2 inch or 9 x 1 1/2 inch round baking pans. Combine reserved crumbs with nuts; sprinkle on top of cakes. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 20-25 minutes. Serve warm. Makes 2 coffee cakes.
