TOM THUMBS 
3/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 c. peanut butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour

Cream shortening and sugar. Blend in peanut butter, salt, egg, vanilla and flour. Mix well. Shape into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Make a deep "well" in center of each with the thumb. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in 350 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on rack. Fill centers with tart jelly (red currant is good). Makes about 3 dozen.
