CROCK POT APPLE BUTTER
5 quarts finely chopped apples
4 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cloves
4 tsp. cinnamon

Fill a 5 quart crock pot heaping full with finely chopped apples. (Tart apples are best.) Drizzle 4 cups sugar (or less, depending upon sweetness of apples), 4 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cloves and 1/4 teaspoon salt, over the apples. Cover. (Lid may not fit tightly at start, but apples will shrink as cooked.) Begin cooking on high, then lower heat and cook all day until thick and dark color. Stir occasionally. Place in small peanut butter jars, cool and freeze.

Crock Pot Apple Butter

The jars you can freeze are the ones with the large mouth jar. I have canned for 37 years and never had trouble. If you are canning to put on your shelves for you can use the smaller mouth. Make sure you preserve as the recipe calls for. I have made it for 5 years but couldn't find the one I have used before -- good though. Mary Lou

MMMM Apple Butter. I like it warm so I can dip toaster waffles in the butter.

You can freeze things, but liquids will expand so leave room at the top of the jar.

Todays peanut butter jars are made out of plastic so they shouldn't explode in the freezer. I prefer to can mine in jars since freezer space is limited.

You can use freezer jars (glass), I did for freezer jams and had no problems at all. The package will specifically state that they are able to be frozen.

If you freeze glass jars you could have an explosion in your freezer. Much safer to use plastic storage containers. Also make sure you sterilize any storage containers and lids you use before you add the apple butter
