My mom has been making this for many years and it's always a winner. She uses Pepperidge Farm Party Rye. I bake, so when I have extra rye bread (or too heavy, which is common), I remove the crusts and slice it into 2" squares 1/8" thick and save it in the freezer - just for this recipe.
