SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 c. buttermilk
1 c. raisins
1 c. walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour with dry ingredients. In large bowl beat at high speed: Butter, sugars, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. At low speed, beat in flour mixture (in fourths). Alternate with buttermilk. Beat until smooth 1 minute. Add raisins and walnuts. Cook 35-40 minutes.
