DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. hot water
1/2 c. cocoa

Combine hot water with cocoa and let it cool. Not quite 1 1/2 c. self-rising flour (approximately 1 tbsp. less) 1 1/4 tsp. vanilla flavoring 1 egg 1/2 c. Crisco 1 c. sugar

Cream Crisco and sugar together. Add 1 egg and blend well. Then add your soda to buttermilk and pour into chocolate mixture. Add to creamed mixture along with flavoring. Add flour and beat until smooth. Pour into 2 or 3 greased and floured pans. Bake at 375 degrees until done.

ICING FOR DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE:

3/4 c. canned cream
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter

Cook cream and sugar, stirring constantly, on medium heat. When it gets a little thick, take off heat. Add butter and 1 1/2 teaspoons flavoring. Stir well and pour over cake while icing is hot.
