1 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. thick applesauce
2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. each salt, soda, baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 c. Grapenuts
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Beat together sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla until creamy. Add applesauce and beat well. Sift flour with salt, soda, baking powder and spices. Stir into first mixture. Mix in Grapenuts and nuts. Chill dough, then drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheets 2 inches apart. Bake at 375 degrees about 12 minutes. Makes 4 1/2 dozen.
