RICH 'N TENDER COOKIES 
1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 c. shortening
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. baking soda
walnut halves

Cream sugars and shortening; add eggs. Blend dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Chill several hours. Form into balls. Roll in sugar and press walnut halves in center. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 375 degrees on ungreased cookie sheets.
