2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. lard
1 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
1/2 c. raisins, cut up
1/2 c. dates, cut up
3/4 c. walnuts
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 eggs

Sift flour, sugar, soda, salt, cocoa, spices in mixing bowl. Drop in lard, add applesauce. Add eggs, beat well; add fruits and nuts. Mix thoroughly. Bake in tube pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 25 minutes. (If sweetened applesauce is used, use only 1 1/4 cups sugar.)
