HOMEMADE GRAPENUTS
1 1/2 c. bran
2 c. whole wheat flour
2 c. buttermilk, or milk (sour), or half yogurt--half water mix
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda

Step 1: Mix ingredients together. In a well greased, shallow pan bake mixture at 350 degrees F. until it seems browned and well done--about an hour.

Step 2: Let stand overnight in a cool place--do not cover. When the "pan bread" seems quite dry, break sections off and finely chop in a food processor. Spread "crumbs" on cookie sheets, pizza pans, or similar pan, and allow crumbs to crisp in the oven at about 300 degrees F. Watch so crumbs don't burn! Serve with milk--it's a crunchy breakfast cereal. Mix and store with raisins, if desired.

Variation: Stop at Step 1. This makes a nice, simple pan bread which is also very handy for breakfast. Also other ingredients can be added, such as reducing the flour to 1 3/4 cups and adding 1/4 cup wheat germ, etc...
