RED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE | |
2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1 1/2 to 2 sq. baking chocolate 1/2 c. butter or shortening 1/2 c. buttermilk 1/2 c. boiling water 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1 tsp. vanilla Sift flour with salt and soda 3 times. Melt chocolate over hot water. Cream butter then add sugar blending thoroughly. Add beaten eggs and beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla, mix in cold chocolate. Combine buttermilk and water. Add flour and liquid alternately in several portions beginning and ending with flour and beating until smooth after each addition. Bake in 2 (8 inch) pans or 1 (9 x 13 inch) pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 27 to 30 minutes. Note: 1/2 cup cocoa may be substituted for chocolate (sift cocoa with flour) and increase shortening to 2/3 cup. |
