FRENCH BREAD 
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 1/2 c. warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. shortening
4 c. flour

Combine yeast and 1/2 cup warm water; add to 1 tablespoon sugar, salt and shortening and 1 cup water. Mix, then add flour. Set aside to rise, stirring every 10 minutes for 50 minutes. Cut dough in half; spread each piece to approximately 8x10 inches; roll jelly roll style and slash. Place on cookie sheet and let rise 1 1/2 hours until double. Bake 30-35 minutes at 400 degrees. Brush with melted butter.
