GOLDEN APPLE PINWHEELS 
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
2 apples
1/2 c. chopped nuts
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Vanilla Sauce

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk and stir just until ingredients are moistened. Turn onto floured board. Knead gently a few times. Roll out to a 12"x18" rectangle. Peel, core and chop apples. Combine apples with nuts, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; sprinkle apple mixture over dough. Roll up like jelly roll and seal edge. Cut in pieces about 2" wide and place cut side down in shallow baking dish. Pour half of Vanilla Sauce over and bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve warm topped with remaining sauce. Makes 9 servings.

VANILLA SAUCE:

3/4 c. sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. water
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix together sugar, flour and salt. Stir water. Cool until mixture thickens and boils. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Stir until butter is melted.
