JEWEL COOKIES 
1 c. butter, softened
1 1/2 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. salt

Thoroughly cream the butter, confectioners' sugar, and vanilla; beat in the eggs. Sift together dry ingredients; gradually stir into creamed mixture; mix well. Chill 1 hour. On lightly floured surface, roll into 1/4 inches. Cut with 2 inch round cutter. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees about 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Makes about 4 dozen.
